Event progress

Phase 1-2

The first stop of the IAU tour saw students visit the Lonely space hotel in the Qaidam plateaus of Lenghu, Qinghai. The transformation of the Star Mentors was readily apparent. From delivering initial stereotypical lectures, they evolved to personalize their interactions by the third day. They learned to respect individuals from diverse backgrounds and environments, collaborating efficiently. One parent shared a behind-the-scenes story: from staying up late each night before arriving to prepare for the class to being conscientious throughout the event, this service-learning program made the children more diligent in their preparations, leaving parents both relieved and touched. The overall awareness and cooperative spirit of these Star Mentors have been significantly enhanced; they have not only experienced growth and progress but also gained a profound sense of accomplishment.

During the second phase of the event, our starry sky instructors provided in-depth explanations about the cosmos. At the Yadan Hotel and Mars Camp, many visitors joined our stargazing activities, gathering under the starry sky to listen as the instructors explained the birth and death of stars, the evolution of galaxies, and other astronomical phenomena. In a lively and engaging manner, the star tutors transformed astronomical knowledge into an imaginative adventure. The event coincided with the Lenghu Science Fiction and Literature Awards ceremony, and the Star Mentors gave a special Star Talk to the science fiction writers and judges in attendance including the author of the Three Body Problem, Liu Cixin.

Following the first tour: Dunhuang's travel agency has “star guided tours” into the standard program, they specifically spend a lot of money to invite astronomical experts on the driver and tour guide astronomical training. Mr. Dong is one of them. We were amazed by the detailed record of “protection of the stars” in his study notes. Mr. Dong observed that starting is the hardest part, but once a spark is ignited, it spreads rapidly. This principle underlies our “IAU Star Mentorship” program. Although the first phase was challenging, it has ignited hope.
